About this book

A breakfast of freshly caught bass turns into a debate about a disused tin mine on the Cornish coast. Gwyn Pendarve is eager to hear Captain Hardock's plans for making the old Ydoll workings pay, while his father, a retired cavalry officer, treats the proposal with caution. Family teasing, fishing and Gwyn's affection for his collie, Grip, give this children's adventure a lively domestic beginning.

The mine brings a different atmosphere. In a later scene, Gwyn and his friend Joe descend with Dinass into wet galleries, where branching passages and flooded openings demand care. What seems to be an answering voice proves to be an echo, sharpening the boys' unease. George Manville Fenn combines the pleasures of coastal life with suspense below ground, giving readers a story about curiosity, friendship and the need to judge danger.
