The International Spy

An unexplained submarine interrupts a conversation between two imperial sisters on a palace terrace overlooking Danish waters. Their concern turns from the vessel to the hidden influences that might draw their countries into conflict. They arrange a secret signal for a crisis, and one sister recommends a trusted intelligence agent. Allen Upward builds his novel around international intrigue during the Russo-Japanese War, linking private conversations at court with dangers at sea.

The first-person account later reaches a Russian ruler who places great confidence in a medium named Auguste. A supposed message from Madame Blavatsky's spirit warns of a threat to the Baltic fleet, while the visitor questions the warning and sends a despatch urging vigilance. Readers interested in political adventure will find a story of secret communications, naval anxiety and competing claims to knowledge. Its court scenes make trust itself a source of suspense.
