About this book

The Map of Life is by William Edward Hartpole Lecky, who is listed in the front as the Rt. Hon. W. E. H. Lecky. A list of his works printed in the front gives the subtitle Conduct and Character.

In one passage the author says that in busy and competitive spheres men tend to seek happiness from without rather than from within, and that English character is an objective one, in which introspection is not congenial and reticence and self-restraint are the lessons most often taught. He adds that long mournings for an old grief are less common than on the Continent. Another passage turns to France and gives the vote on Revision in the Chamber, 446 votes to 278, short of the three-fourths majority required. A further passage lists uncertainties of life, including chance stronger than wisdom and desert and reward widely separated.
