About this book
The Mysterious Sketch is by Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian. The narrator says he had gone to Nuremberg to study the old German masters, but a lack of liquidity meant he had to paint portraits. The narrator describes a little inn, tall and narrow, opposite the Saint Sebaldus Chapel in Nuremberg, where he spent the unhappiest days of his life.
The narrator says he is penniless as usual and threatened with debtor's prison by the steward Rap. The narrator wakes going on for one o'clock, relights his light and dashes down on paper a quick sketch that he calls something strange, bizarre and bearing no resemblance to his usual style. Van Spreckdal shows the narrator's drawing without a word to a broad-shouldered man, who looks at it, goes pale and lets out a roar which makes everyone freeze in terror.
