About this book

John Tresler arrives at Forks Settlement tired from the saddle and visibly new to prairie life. His riding clothes amuse the men outside the hotel, but his willingness to laugh at himself helps him join their company. Bound for Julian Marbolt's ranch at Mosquito Bend, this Harvard newcomer enters a Montana world of small settlements, ranch workers and rough local customs.

Ridgwell Cullum's western novel combines frontier adventure with romance. Its opening gives the saloon crowd distinct voices and a sharp sense of humor, while a later scene brings Tresler into a private conversation with the distressed Diane. Her fear of her father's approach and Tresler's wish to protect her shift the mood from public banter to personal danger. Readers interested in western fiction will find both the everyday friction of an outsider's arrival and the emotional tensions within a ranch household.
