About this book

The Origin and Deeds of the Goths is credited to Jordanes. A note in the book says the story of the Goths recorded in the Getica of Jordanes, a Christian Goth who wrote his account in the year 551, probably in Constantinople, is now put in English form. The English version is part of a thesis presented to the Faculty of Princeton University by Charles C. Mierow in 1908.

The text follows Athavulf, who left at Barcelona his treasures and the men who were unfit for war, and entered the interior of Spain with a few faithful followers. The writer describes an island surrounded by a sluggish sea, and says he will explain its position as he has found it in Greek and Latin authors. The text also has Theodoric depart from the royal city and return to his own people.
