About this book
The Paris Sketch Book of Mr. M. A. Titmarsh is by William Makepeace Thackeray, and its contents list pieces titled "An Invasion of France", "A Caution to Travellers" and "The Fêtes of July", among others. A dedicatory letter to M. Aretz, tailor, at 27, rue Richelieu, Paris, begins "It becomes every man in his station to acknowledge and praise virtue wheresoever he may find it." Mary says she loves Pierre Ancel and will marry no other. Schneider tells Marie Ancel that she may decide the fate of her father and that he shall return in a few hours.
The text says the drama of Victor Hugo, Dumas, and the enlightened classes is profoundly immoral and absurd, while the drama of the common people is absurd, if you will, but good and right-hearted. The text names a drama that obtained a vast success at the Porte Saint Martin, "La Duchesse de la Vauballière." Attwood bursts into a little garret, and cries to Titmarsh that he is a preserver and a best friend.
