About this book

A royal breakfast in Paflagonia turns into a scramble to welcome Prince Bulbo, heir to the neighboring kingdom of Crim Tartary. King Valoroso anticipates the visit, Princess Angelica praises the guest, and the queen remembers the king's nephew, Giglio. Behind the preparations lies a question of succession: Valoroso took the throne while his nephew was still a child. William Makepeace Thackeray makes royal ambition look ridiculous through family squabbles, extravagant shopping and the king's efforts to justify his position.

Written as a children's fairy tale, the story grew from holiday characters drawn for young listeners in Rome. Its playful narrator treats the adventures as a household performance, mixing grand speeches with ordinary concerns such as breakfast. In the middle excerpt, a fairy rose passes from Bulbo to Angelica, and their feelings shift with it. Readers can enjoy both the magical complications and the jokes about vanity, privilege and unreliable admiration.
