About this book
The Second Funeral of Napoleon is by William Makepeace Thackeray. The contents list three sections: On the Disinterment of Napoleon at St. Helena, On the Voyage from St. Helena to Paris, and On the Funeral Ceremony.
The first section begins with a letter that says, "It is no easy task in this world to distinguish between what is great in it, and what is mean." The writer says that history is written on fig-leaves. The writer says of men that they have, as it were, entered into a compact among themselves to pursue the fig-leaf system a l'outrance. One scene describes a tall handsome cross-bearer bearing a long gold cross, its front turned towards his grace the Archbishop.
