About this book

The book is by Hilaire Belloc, with illustrations by G. K. Chesterton, and was published in New York and London in 1928. Its list of illustrations includes Aunt Hilda settling everything, Neighbour Hellup and Neighbour Jake, the Ancestor, Sir Harry Murtenshaw, and a portrait of Lord de Beaurivage, then Mr. George Huggins, as a seller of vegetables in 1883.

In one passage Mrs. William Maple has decided that the time has come for a proper house in the country and suggests Rackham. She says that the sums advanced and the arrears of interest come to close on £18,000. In another, a young man named John hears from his father that Rackham is not his any more, and that Aunt Hilda has been generous. In a further scene two ladies talk in a motor about holiness, and his lordship jokes that a holy man might lay the spook.
