About this book

The Memoirs of Mr. Charles J. Yellowplush, by William Makepeace Thackeray, has a contents list that names Miss Shum's Husband, The Amours of Mr. Deuceace and Epistles to the Literati, among others. The narrator introduces himself by saying he was born in the year one and is seven-and-thirty years old. The narrator's mamma chose the name Charles James Harrington Fitzroy Yellowplush in compliment to several noble families and to a coachman who wore a yellow livery and drove the Lord Mayor of London.

Miss Mary is sent out of the room and told not to come back again all day, and the narrator says his heart yearned to the poor girl as she came sobbing down stairs. A character named Haltamont makes his appearance and looks at the narrator as black as thunder. The narrator remarks that her ladyship did very well to speak French, because De l'Orge would not have understood her else.
