About this book
The title page of The Pyrenees promises numerous sketches by the author and twenty-two maps. The text says there is no forest in which it is easier to lose one's way than this great stretch of upland, and that the Souscousse district, due east of Ste Engrace, is a labyrinth of complicated valleys. The text says that four valleys in the Pyrenees count together in travel upon foot: the Val d'Aspe and the Val d'Oussau on the French side, and the valleys of the rivers Aragon and Gallego on the Spanish side.
The text says that on the French side the Pyrenees consist in a series of great ribs or buttresses running up from the plains perpendicularly to the main heights of the range. On the Spanish side, the text says, the main structure is in folds parallel to the watershed. The text advises that you must never make your provision for less than forty-eight hours, and that it is better to make it for sixty.
