About this book
The Red Book of Heroes is by Mrs. Lang and was edited by Andrew Lang. The preface says that all books are not fairy tales. A character named Florence liked best being at home with her friends in the village, who were very proud of her wishing to take their pictures with her new photographic camera.
A chapter naming Havelock says that at this date, and for many years after, it was the custom in the English army that the officers should buy their promotion, unless a vacancy occurred by death. A chapter about Ambrose says he set the rich citizens an example by giving all the money he had, and that the bishop brought out the golden vessels of the church, which were the pride of Milan, and melted them down so that as far as in him lay all prisoners might be freed.
