About this book

Three American Red Cross nurses, Mildred Thornton, Barbara Meade and Nona Davis, are stationed at a Russian fortress near the Polish border in the autumn of the First World War. Warsaw has already fallen, and the garrison at Grovno is waiting for the German advance. The girls are strangers in a country they admit they do not understand.

The story opens when Nona receives an unsigned note, written in perfect English, asking her to visit a small house a mile and a half away to meet a former friend. Her companions think she should ignore it, but she sets out alone. Later chapters take the nurses through the evacuation of the wounded by cart and train toward Petrograd and the Winter Palace.

Margaret Vandercook wrote this in 1916 as the next volume of her Red Cross girls series for young readers. It mixes friendship, hospital work and a little mystery against a wartime setting.
