About this book
The massive peak of Thunderhead is described as towering preëminent among the summits of the Great Smoky Mountains, in the semblance of the cumulus-cloud from which it takes its name. A judge sustains the fixed gaze of one half the county when the criminal docket is taken up and the case called. The judge is said to look somewhat older than his age, which was thirty-five or six. Men and boys occupy all the windows, some of them standing to get a better view of the prisoner when he should be led in.
One man is shown reluctant, as if awakening from a trance, as he gazes at the unkempt circle of mountaineers about the dying fire. A little school-house is described as vacant in the night and dark but for the moonbeams. A woman pauses near the edge of the narrow road to wait for Buck and the wagon to come up.
