About this book
The Scarecrow by Percy MacKaye is described on its title page as “Or, The Glass of Truth: A Tragedy of the Ludicrous.” Richard bows stiffly, says good morning, and puts a rustic colonial question to Lord Ravensbane: whether it is the latest fashion to smoke incessantly in ladies’ parlours.
Richard asks Justice Merton who a magpie is, indicating Dickon, and Justice Merton hisses in fury, “Satan!” Ravensbane says “I am a monster.” Ravensbane says he loves Rachel, and Dickon answers that he shall have her, for lover and wife. Ravensbane asks Dickon whether he will make him a man, a man and worthy of her.
