The Scholemaster is headed as a plain and perfect way of teaching children to understand, write and speak the Latin. The preface to the reader has the speaker thinking to prepare "some litle treatise for a New yeares gift that Christmas". The preface describes the building of a "poore Scholehouse" whose work "rose dailie higher and wider, than I thought it would at the beginninge".
The text says that Cæs. Commentaries are to be read with all curiositie. The text says thus much for Plautus and Terence, for matter, tong, and meter, what is to be followed, and what to be exchewed in them. The text adds that after Plautus and Terence no writing remayneth vntill Tullies tyme.
