About this book

A new term begins with noisy reunions at an English boarding school housed in an old convent. Deirdre Sullivan and Dulcie Wilcox expect to resume their close friendship, but a third girl has been assigned to their bedroom. Gerda Thorwaldson speaks fluent German and has lived in Germany, giving her roommates an excuse for suspicion. Their complaints draw a sharp rebuke from an older pupil, while Gerda's reserved manner continues to puzzle them.

Angela Brazil sets this school story among dormitory conversations, dancing, classroom interests and preparations for a play about ancient Rome. Gerda surprises the others with a composed performance and carefully devised stage makeup. A barred room and a torn letter add mystery to the school setting. Readers interested in school fiction can find lively dialogue, the pressures of belonging to a group, and the gap between first impressions and another pupil's abilities.

About the author

Angela Brazil

Angela Brazil was one of the first British writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories", written from the characters' point of view and intended primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. In the first half of the 20th century she published nearly 50 books of girls' fiction, the vast majority being boarding school stories.
