The Silent History

Eli Horowitz and his coauthors built The Silent History as something originally serialized for a phone app, then collected as a book. The premise is that a generation of children has been born without the capacity for language, and the novel is constructed entirely from short, dated testimonies given by people who knew them.

The form is the thing. Each entry is short. Each speaker has a distinct voice. The reader pieces together the larger arc by reading enough of these accounts to start seeing the patterns.

The book asks what language is for, what it costs, and what its absence might create instead.

For readers who liked David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas for its structural ambition, or Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves for its formal play, this is in adjacent territory. Quieter than either. The emotional payoff comes from accumulation, not climax.
