About this book

On a breezy April morning a man walks out of prison in a camel-hair overcoat, tweed jacket and felt hat, a gladstone bag in his hand. He has resolved to change his name, aiming at nothing less than total transformation, though the voice narrating his story calls him a poor sap and doubts that a new name can hide old sins.

He had always pictured his release as a scene from a gangster film, but it turns out to be quieter, because he has already been let out on weekends and holidays.

Christine Falls (2006) set a hard-drinking Dublin pathologist named Quirke at the head of a crime series that John Banville published as Benjamin Black, keeping it apart from the work that had won him the Booker Prize a year earlier for The Sea.
