About this book

This 1909 volume collects six plays by Robert Greene: Alphonsus, King of Arragon; A Looking-Glass for London and England; Orlando Furioso; Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay; James the Fourth; and George-a-Greene, the Pinner of Wakefield. An introduction begins with Thomas Nash's defence of Greene against the attacks of Gabriel Harvey, and takes up traditions about him, including the idea that he had once been a minister, two manuscript notes on a copy of George-a-Greene, and a line from his tract Repentance. An appendix and notes are listed in the contents.

In one scene Orlando finds trees carved with love-knots and the inscription Medor and Angelica, and the boy Orgalio remarks that Angelica is a woman and therefore changeable. A shepherd then appears. In another scene a shoemaker in merry Bradford tells another man to put his staff down, citing a local custom.
