About this book
Herbert Thurston, S.J., gives his book the subtitle An Account of their History and Devotional Purpose. This is a reprint dated 1914. It includes an illustration of the Veronica station, the fourth of seven stations carved by Adam Krafft at Nuremberg between about 1490 and 1505, set in the wall of a house. The inscription is quoted in German and English and places the spot five hundred paces from Pilate's house.
In one passage the Station of Veronica is taken up through writers who comment on it, among them Cardinal Newman and Henri Perreyve. Another quotes the Dominican pilgrim Fabri's description of the courtyard of the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Elsewhere the author follows the Via Dolorosa as the Franciscan guides of the seventeenth century showed it, naming the pilgrims Wey, Fabri and Breydenbach and giving Surius's estimate of a distance in paces.
