About this book

The Story of a Play speaks of a young actor who thought he saw his part in Maxwell's play and had so far made his way upward on the Pacific Coast that he felt justified in taking the road with a combination of his own. The text says the actor met the author at a dinner of the Papyrus Club in Boston, where they were introduced.

One character says, "All the world loves a lover," and Maxwell says, "I don't believe it does." A passage says that society afflicted Maxwell, and that a woman could not care for it unless he did. A rehearsal scene has Godolphin beginning to fidget; Mrs. Harley comes in, and Godolphin rises and advances towards her with the prompt-book shut on his thumb.
