About this book
Returning to Chappaqua in May 1873, Cecilia Pauline Cleveland records a summer among the Greeley family in Westchester County, New York. Her journal begins with a walk through gardens and woods, a visit to a house built for her late aunt, and a Sunday drive to a small chapel at Mount Kisco. Domestic routines, music, visitors and outings give the account its daily shape, while memories of family losses remain close at hand.
Published in 1874, these journal leaves also preserve family recollections of Horace Greeley. In one conversation, Gabrielle challenges a published account of her father's early life, and Mrs. Cleveland responds with details about his childhood clothing and the family's circumstances. The book offers readers interested in household history a personal account of country life, together with a family's efforts to explain its own past.
