About this book
The Story of Burnt Njal carries the subtitle The Great Icelandic Tribune, Jurist, and Counsellor. The book is also called Njal's Saga and is described as originally written in Icelandic, sometime in the 13th Century A.D. The first chapter, headed Of Fiddle Mord, presents a man named Mord, surnamed Fiddle, the son of Sigvat the Red, who dwelt at the Vale in the Rangrivervales. Mord is described as a mighty chief and so great a lawyer that no judgments were thought lawful unless he had a hand in them, and he had an only daughter, named Unna.
Njal calls out to Skarphedinn, asking where he is going and calling him kinsman; the reply is that it is a sheep hunt, and Njal says it was so once before, but then they hunted men. Modolf Kettle's son thrust at Kari with his spear, and the blow fell on Kari's shield, where the spear stuck fast, and Kari twists the shield so smartly that the spear snapped short off.
