About this book
Hendrik Willem Van Loon, listed on the title page as Professor of the Social Sciences in Antioch College, begins with a foreword for Hansje and Willem. In it he recalls a day when he was twelve or thirteen and an uncle took him to the top of the tower of Old Saint Lawrence in Rotterdam. The book carries a dedication to Jimmie and a line from Alice asking what use a book without pictures is.
The text speaks to the reader directly. One passage explains Egyptian hieroglyphics, a word meaning sacred writing, and mentions Champollion and the Rosetta stone. Another tells how Luther was called before the Diet of Worms, refused to take back a single word he had written and was hidden in the Wartburg, a castle belonging to the Elector of Saxony. A further passage compares Athens and Florence with Kansas City.
