About this book
The narrator says that few things have been more beautiful than his note book on the Deist Controversy as it fell downward through the waters of the Mediterranean. The narrator complains that he wants his book back, as it is for his Fellowship Dissertation. Some woman or other through her parasol suggests, "Let us leave this child of nature to dive for the book while we go on to the other grotto." The narrator says the two of them were deposited outside the little grotto on a great sunlit rock.
A speaker cries angrily, "He saw the Siren." A speaker says that every living thing made a man unhappy because he knew it would die, and that all he cared to do was to sleep. A speaker says that silence and loneliness cannot last for ever, and that it may be a hundred or a thousand years, but the sea lasts longer, and she shall come out of it and sing.
