About this book
The preface of The Strange Adventures of a Pebble by Hallam Hawksworth says the purpose of the little book is to present the chief features in the strange story of the pebbles, and so of the larger pebble we call the earth. The preface adds that it is hoped that readers of various ages will be entertained, without suspecting that they are being taught.
A speaker called Wise Man No. 4 says that a great flood brought the little foreigners. The text says that for a long time it was believed that the material in the hills was drifted in by the waters, which was called the drift theory, although it is now known that this theory was not the true one. The text says one of the useless organs in man is called the vermiform appendix.
