The Strength of the Mormon Position is an apologetic pamphlet by Orson F. Whitney (1855-1931), apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the church’s foremost literary spokesman of the early twentieth century. The pamphlet presents the case for the restored gospel to outside readers: the apostasy from primitive Christianity, the necessity of a restoration, the calling of Joseph Smith, the witnesses to the Book of Mormon, and the fruits of the latter-day work in the gathering and building of the Saints. Whitney wrote a series of such defences during the years when the church faced national hostility after the Reed Smoot Senate hearings, and his measured literary tone was part of the church’s effort to present itself to the American mainstream.
