About this book

Beside a cave fire, Long-Beard tells his grandsons how the families of the Sea Valley learned to act together. Each household once guarded its own tree or cave, but an attack by a smaller, united group exposes the cost of that isolation. Shared watchmen, common protection and the first laws grow out of the need to combine individual strength.

Jack London's short stories use conflict to examine power, cooperation and the responsibilities that come with ability. One story moves into an imagined future, where United States agent Silas Bannerman traces Emil Gluck's movements alongside a series of destructive incidents. The contrast between a tribal origin story and an investigation involving electrical invention gives the collection a broad range of settings. Readers interested in social fiction can follow ideas about collective life through stories built around danger, argument and practical consequences.
