About this book

The Talking Horse, and Other Tales is by F. Anstey, the author of Vice Versa, and this is the second edition, published in London in 1892. The preface says the stories first appeared in magazines. The contents list The Talking Horse, The Good Little Girl, A Matter of Taste, Don: The Story of a Greedy Dog, Taken by Surprise, Paleface and Redskin, Shut Out, Tommy's Hero, A Canine Ishmael and Marjory.

In one passage, a narrator rides a horse called Brutus who seems to foresee his plans and will not let him slip away at the livery stable. Another passage has a man arranging a portrait who suggests the sitter pose upside down on the cross-trees of a prop mast. In a further passage a narrator at a window weeps for the first time since Marjory died.
