About this book
The Tariff in Our Times is by Ida M. Tarbell and was published in October, 1911. Chapter VII, The Mills and Allison Bills, describes William R. Morrison of Illinois as a Democrat who for many years had been among the most devoted to a reform bill. The text says Mr. Aldrich called attention to the growth of the free list as a proof of the party’s generosity.
The text reports a statement that in 1847, 88 per cent of the articles imported were dutiable, cut down in 1887 to 66 per cent, and calls it deceptive because the variety of things imported had enormously increased in that period. The text says that, according to the first of the reports issued, only one corporation in the state had its sinks properly trapped, and fever was epidemic. The text says the laws governing child labor were generally ignored.
