About this book

Atalantis Major is headed 1711, with an introduction by John J. Perry. A passage says that on 14 April 1710 Shrewsbury was made Lord Chamberlain over the unavailing protests of Godolphin. The passage says Harley found himself with an immoderate House of Commons, in which the Tories held 320 seats and the Whigs only 150.

A passage says that one of these presided over the Treasure and the other over the Army, and that both were by the Artifice of their Enemies dispossess'd of the Queen of the Island's Favour. The text says that in the North Part of the Island the Divisions of the Court had not extended so far, at least they had not been push'd so vigorously, and the great Officers kept their Posts. A passage speaks of the anguish of soul on the faces of Atalantic Noblemen at a surprizing event, and of how they gnashed their teeth for anger and cursed the hour that ever they were members of this grand council.

Daniel Defoe

Four books here, and only two of them were signed. Robinson Crusoe appeared in 1719 as the account of a mariner of York, written by himself, and readers took that literally for a while.
