About this book

The Treasure of the Isle of Mist by W. W. Tarn is described on its title page as “A FAIRY TALE FOR MY DAUGHTER.” The contents list names chapters such as The Gift of the Search, The Beginning of Trouble and The Haunted Cave, among others. The text says the Student and Fiona lived in a little gray house on the shores of a gray sea-loch in the Isle of Mist.

Fiona asks the old hawker whether he has a hedgehog, saying she wants one for the Urchin because it is his namesake. Five hedgehogs pass the window in a solemn row, two big and three little, with the black terrier marshalling the procession. The text describes the long lead-colored rollers racing in from the Atlantic, smashing themselves on the crags and shooting up heavenward in columns of spray thrice the height of the cliffs.
