About this book

The Treaties of Canada with the Indians of Manitoba and the North-West Territories is a collection by Alexander Morris, late Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, the North-West Territories, and Kee-Wa-Tin. The title page says the volume includes the negotiations on which the treaties were based, and other information relating thereto. The dedication, addressed to the Earl of Dufferin, speaks of the work of obtaining the alliance and promoting the welfare of the Indian tribes in the North-West of Canada.

One council report says the majority were still unwilling to treat and that, by intimidation and threats of violence, any open expression of opinion was prevented except by the old war Chief, Assicknack, who declared his full assent to the wishes of the Government. A travel account says that Mr. Christie and the writer left for Fort Pitt, and that they arrived on the 5th September, the day appointed. A treaty text records that the said Indian Chief and Councillors subscribed and set their hands at the Grand Rapids on the twenty-seventh day of September, in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-five.
