June 15 begins with Guy Burckhardt waking from a frightening dream of an explosion. His wife Mary reports a similar dream, yet the familiar streets of Tylerton seem ordinary as he heads to work. Small disturbances soon unsettle that impression: a stranger presses an unfamiliar brand at the cigar stand, and the elevator broadcasts unusually insistent advertisements. Office duties carry on alongside his growing unease.

Frederik Pohl's 1955 science fiction story builds its mystery out of these everyday details. In the middle excerpt, Swanson leads Burckhardt through a cinema to a hidden metal tunnel and describes events that challenge Burckhardt's memory. Swanson's explanations remain uncertain, giving the reader reasons to question each apparent answer. The combination of commercial pressure, unreliable recollection and an increasingly strange town makes this a pointed read for anyone interested in how familiar routines can conceal a disturbing reality.

Frederik Pohl

Frederik George Pohl Jr. was an American science-fiction writer, editor, and fan, with a career spanning nearly 75 years—from his first published work, the 1937 poem "Elegy to a Dead Satellite: Luna", to the 2011 novel All the Lives He Led.
