About this book

In Issoudun, family gossip surrounds Doctor Rouget, a physician whose private calculations reach into the lives of his wife and children. Honoré de Balzac begins the novel in 1792, following the Rouget and Descoings families through their business interests and domestic arrangements. The doctor sends his daughter Agathe to her uncle in Paris, where a grocery business becomes caught up in revolutionary politics. Money, reputation and parental authority shape these opening scenes.

Another household dispute develops around Flore, Jean-Jacques Rouget and the impoverished officer Maxence Gilet. Flore falls in love with Maxence and urges Jean-Jacques to offer him a home, using both emotional pressure and precise claims about household finances. The narrator moves between conversations and commentary on the social habits behind them. Readers interested in family conflict and the influence of wealth will find those concerns expressed through closely observed bargaining in Katharine Prescott Wormeley's English translation.
