About this book

Words for the Wise is by T. S. Arthur and carries the imprint Philadelphia, 1851. The preface hopes the lessons of the book will be sufficient as warnings, incentives and examples to hundreds and thousands who read them.

The contents list names pieces such as The Poor Debtor, The Sunday Christian and Making Haste to Be Rich, among others. A rich merchant named Petron remarks to a friend that there is one honest man in the world. Mr. Moale tells his wife Alice that he has paid off another debt, Petron's. A speaker says he became so interested in the remarks of one of the members that he forgot all about Lucy Ellison until a customer called him off. Mr. Lloyd Tomlinson lost much of the energy he had possessed in his younger days, and only about three hundred acres of the original Tomlinson property remained.
