About this book
The Vanderlark is credited to Margaret St. Clair. The opening lines say that the peculiar quality of deep space is hard to put into words. Alice asks McFeen whether there are any more of them when he comes back from two hold, and he answers that Hyra are hard to count and that he found a hole in the mesh of their cage.
Alice recalls saying that maybe there was a reason why the Biologic Survey wouldn't release any Hyra to fight the blight on Varro. McFeen kneels beside the cage and inspects the mesh centimeter by centimeter, and the cage holds fewer Hyra than there had been before. A shadow wells up enormously in a puffing-out of black, and McFeen is left holding the top edge of the cage while all the rest is gone.
