About this book

Woolf's first novel, published in 1915. Rachel Vinrace, a sheltered twenty-four-year-old raised without much formal education, sails from London to South America on her father's ship and stays at a resort among a company of English travelers. Away from home, she reads, argues, and slowly comes into her own mind, and she falls in love with the aspiring writer Terence Hewet. Woolf sketches the small talk and snobbery of Edwardian society while tracing Rachel's inward awakening toward independence and self-knowledge. The book, which gives an early appearance to Clarissa Dalloway, moves toward an ending far darker than its holiday setting suggests. Free PDF and EPUB edition available.
