About this book
An evening cry for help sends Eric Swift and a volunteer boat crew racing through the surf near Golden Gate Park. Eric is in his second summer with the volunteers, but this is his first nighttime rescue. His friend, known as the Eel, reaches the struggling swimmer, while Eric stays close to help. The scene introduces a boys' adventure built around the skill, patience and teamwork of lifesaving.
Published in 1915, Francis Rolt-Wheeler's story links Eric's experiences with the work of the United States Coast Guard and the Lighthouse Bureau. A later passage finds him in cadet uniform, volunteering to board a burning steamer after another swimmer is hurt by wreckage. Lighthouses, rescue equipment and dangerous coastal waters give the story its practical detail. Readers interested in maritime adventure can follow a young swimmer learning how courage depends on training and judgment.
