About this book

Ralph leaps from a bridge into a sloop to help a man thrown overboard, fearing that the man may be unable to swim. Ralph reaches out with a boathook and draws the man to the side of the boat when the man grasps its curved iron. The rescued man explains that tangled ropes and pain in his right arm left him able to use only his left hand.

Mrs. Nelson receives an unexpected visit from the squire, who says that he has called on a matter of business. Horace Kelsey, described as a rich insurance agent, helps Ralph's case considerably by his arrival.
