About this book
Then and Now, or Thirty-Six Years in the Rockies, by Robert Vaughn, is described as personal reminiscences of some of the first pioneers of the State of Montana. The dedication says the series of letters includes a short history of Montana’s early days.
A chief is described as coming forward and stating that they were “Crows” and that he wished to know who the group were. The text says the group gave visitors bread and coffee and took a smoke with them, and that smoking with an Indian signifies that he is friendly. The text says the first hot spring that the group had ever seen is today the renowned Hunter Hot Springs, a place of resort for its mineral properties. The text says that letters from Salt Lake cost one dollar each and newspapers fifty cents. A quoted passage says that in 1899 a new geyser, called the New Fountain, broke out in the north basin, resulting in a decided curtailment of the old Fountain Geyser’s eruptions.
