About this book
Three Dramas is by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and gathers The Editor, The Bankrupt and The King. The contents list an introduction and, for each play, a run of acts, with The King also carrying a prologue. The introduction says the three plays were the outcome of a period when Björnson’s views on many topics were undergoing a drastic revision. The introduction adds that two of them were written during, and one immediately after, a three years’ absence from Norway, years spent almost entirely in southern Europe.
In one scene Evje asks Harald whether he has read what they say about him too, and Harald answers “Naturally.” In another scene Berent tells Tjaelde to take the paper and sign it, and Tjaelde, falling on his knees, cries “Mercy, mercy!” In another scene Flink holds out the two pistols to Gran, who says there are to be no seconds, and Anna rushes to Gran, putting her arms round him protectingly.
