About this book

Laughter outside a snowbound cottage introduces a household whose kindness has taken an awkward turn. 'Tilda Jane, a young orphan who keeps house for Hank Dillson and his father, wants to give another unhappy girl a home. The arrival of a much older, larger newcomer upsets the picture she had imagined. Hank recounts the situation to his French neighbours, bringing the reader into a small community where family affection, curiosity and teasing share the same fireside.

Marshall Saunders's 1909 story also gives household animals a strong place in 'Tilda Jane's affections. She and Grandpa grieve over a puppy and pigeon taken away by Perletta, while she lifts the dog Gippie onto her lap. These exchanges show how caring for people and animals can bring competing loyalties. Readers interested in childhood, adopted families and everyday kindness will find a story built around conversations and the practical difficulties of offering help.
