Tom Swift in the City of Gold, subtitled Or, Marvelous Adventures Underground, is a book by Victor Appleton. The contents list names chapters, among others Wonderful News, An Unsuspected Listener and The City Of Gold. In the chapter headed Wonderful News, Mr. Wilson, the Shopton postman, hands a letter over the gate to Tom Swift, the young inventor.
Mr. Damon asks Tom whether he is going to hunt for that buried city of gold, and the young inventor answers that he certainly is. Mr. Swift exclaims "just when I am perfecting my gyroscope!" and says he needs Tom's help. A character named Delazes protests that the senors are not going to start off again at once, and Tom says they are going to cut out the siestas on this trip. The text says that, about the end of the eighth day, Tom and Ned were hacking away at the rocky slab, for Mr. Damon and Eradicate were too weary.
