About this book
George Bird Grinnell wrote Trails of the Pathfinders. The text says that Mackenzie, as usual, sat up one night to watch the guide, so that he should not desert, but Mr. Mackay, who relieved him, permitted the man to slip away. A passage says the men had the inexpressible satisfaction of finding themselves on the bank of a navigable river on the western side of the first great range of mountains.
A scene with caravan traders says a great portion of the men were unprepared for the emergency, scores of guns were empty, and as many more had been wetted by the recent showers. A narrative says the chief priest of the Crees informed those with him that he would endeavor to obtain information from the Great Spirit as to when the traders would arrive. The text says that Carver gave little heed to the suggestion.
