About this book
James P. Boyd's Triumphs and Wonders of the 19th Century includes a description of its picture, which explains the century in symbols: a central figure of Industry, goddesses of Music, Electricity, Literature and Art, an anchor for Navigation, rails for the Railroad, smiths at the anvil for Labor, and above all an angel of Fame ready to crown Genius and Labor with laurel wreaths.
One passage reviews a hundred years of missionary work, calling the nineteenth century the distinctive missionary century and listing societies, funds and mission stations in India and the Pacific islands. Another turns to fruit growing and records that Abel Houghton of Massachusetts grew a seedling gooseberry about 1845, which led to the Houghton and Downing varieties, and that the blackberry is found native only in America.
