About this book

At The Jug, a small Labrador inlet, the Angus family rushes to the jetty when Doctor Joe's boat appears. Joseph Carver has restored young Jamie's sight and recently left for New York to resume his work as a surgeon. His return opens Dillon Wallace's novel of scouting and wilderness life, in which family affection sits beside the practical demands of boats, trapping and survival in severe weather.

A separate mystery develops around the shooting and robbery of Lem Horn. Tracks from nailed boots, a boat and a recovered bullet draw suspicion toward Indian Jake, while Thomas Angus and the boys weigh the evidence against him. The story combines young people's outdoor adventures with close attention to how a remote coastal community reasons, helps its neighbours and faces winter conditions. Regional speech and detailed descriptions of Labrador's changing seasons give readers a sense of the landscape and the people who live there.
