About this book

A sailor's return brings an unexpected child into Susan Talbot's home at Hull in 1568. Richard arrives after a storm with an infant recovered from a wreck, and Susan and her servant begin feeding and tending the baby. Their little son greets the newcomer as a sister. Charlotte M. Yonge gives this household scene detailed surroundings, from the spinning work beside the window to the small toys on the polished floor.

Published in 1882, the historical novel places family concerns within the circumstances of Mary, Queen of Scots' captivity. In a later passage, Antony Babington visits the Talbots, and a kitten's mishap briefly interrupts the company before letters introduce a serious request: Cicely is wanted in the Queen's household. Yonge's preface describes her interest in showing notable people in difficult situations. Readers can approach the period through domestic routines, personal loyalties and the demands that royal affairs make upon a family.
